This year, United Cerebral Palsy of the Inland Empire (UCPIE) combined two incredible initiatives to raise awareness and funds for cerebral palsy research through a campaign called STEPtember. Together, they made for a powerful, community-driven campaign that not only highlighted the importance of staying active but also brought the community together for a great cause.

STEPtember: Moving Toward a Cure

The STEPtember campaign, held from September 1–30, was part of a global initiative to encourage people to get active while raising vital funds for cerebral palsy research. Participants across the world challenged themselves to reach 10,000 steps per day by walking, dancing, swimming, and moving in ways that fit their own abilities. UCPIE supporters stepped up, raising over $6,500 so far to support cerebral palsy research and assistive technologies that can improve the quality of life for individuals living with disabilities.

The beauty of STEPtember is its flexibility—participants could move at their own pace, wherever and whenever they wanted. It gave everyone a chance to make an impact, from the fitness enthusiast to the person looking for a reason to get moving. Every step, every mile, and every donation got us closer to raising critical funds for research and awareness.

Stroll Before the Bowl: A Fun Day Out for a Great Cause

On September 14, we took the STEPtember challenge a step further with our in-person event, Stroll Before the Bowl. The day kicked off with our community meeting at The Shops at Palm Desert at 11 AM, where we enjoyed a relaxed, leisurely walk through the mall while raising funds for cerebral palsy research. This event provided a wonderful opportunity for supporters of all ages and abilities to come together, share stories, and walk with purpose.

But the fun didn’t stop there! After our stroll, everyone gathered at Red Robin in La Quinta for a well-earned meal, where 20% of food sales from the entire day went to support UCPIE’s programs and services. Thanks to the generosity of Red Robin and the support from our participants, it was a fantastic afternoon filled with camaraderie, community, and purpose.

Why It All Matters

STEPtember with the Stroll Before the Bowl were much more than fundraising events—they were about building community, raising awareness, and showing that we can all play a part in supporting individuals with disabilities. Whether it was stepping up to the challenge or enjoying a meal with friends and family, every contribution made a real impact.

With the funds raised, UCPIE will continue to support vital programs like our Adaptive Bike Program and Skill Builders after-school programs. These programs empower children and adults with disabilities to live fuller, more independent lives, providing them with the tools, resources, and opportunities to thrive.
