At United Cerebral Palsy of the Inland Empire, we believe that every individual deserves the chance to grow, express themselves, and be heard. Karolin Goriel’s story is a shining example of how virtual programming can provide meaningful impact and foster growth.

Karolin, a 44-year-old woman with Cerebral Palsy, joined our Virtual Program in 2022. Known for her bubbly personality, radiant smile, and love of fashion and hair accessories, Karolin has made incredible strides since participating in our online activities. With encouragement and consistency, she has developed stronger vocalization skills and enhanced her ability to make decisions—key areas of growth that are helping her unlock her voice.

Program Assistant, Yvonne recalls a special moment when Karolin was given the option to choose a drawing subject during a virtual art activity. When asked, “Should we draw a girl or a boy on the swing?” Karolin proudly responded with “Grr,” demonstrating her effort and determination to communicate. Though she cannot yet form full words, her consistent practice has significantly improved her speech approximations.

Karolin’s engagement extends beyond vocalization. She greets her peers and staff enthusiastically with waves or verbal greetings every time she logs into Zoom. She is always fully present during activities, whether it’s Karate, aerobics, or creative projects. Even with physical challenges and limited mobility, Karolin finds ways to adapt and participate. From modified kicks to arm exercises, she approaches every activity with determination and joy.

Her journey exemplifies the core mission of our Virtual Program: to create inclusive spaces where individuals with disabilities can grow, connect, and find their voice. Through ongoing support and a positive environment, participants like Karolin inspire us with their resilience and enthusiasm.

Karolin’s progress reminds us why we do what we do. With the right tools and supportive spaces, we can help individuals overcome obstacles and achieve personal milestones. Thank you, Karolin, for showing us that growth is possible when we believe in ourselves and each other.
